We couldn't resist the AI craze 😎 - Ergobits #8

Hello, Dygmates! Welcome to another exciting update filled with great news. You won’t want to miss this edition of Ergobits.

We are excited to announce several updates, including new Bazecor 1.7.0, beta firmware updates for the Raise 2 and the Defy, and the relaunch of the Dygma Certified Refurbished. However, the most significant reveal is the introduction of the new Dygma AI.

Export Backups with Bazecor 1.7.0

Let’s start with the latest release of Bazecor, version 1.7.0. This update introduces a long-awaited feature: the ability to manually export your configuration backups. You can now go to Preferences, click on Backups, and select the “Export Backup” button. This allows you to name and save your layout configuration to any folder on your computer.

This feature is particularly beneficial for users who frequently switch between operating systems or enjoy experimenting with new layouts without losing their original setup. It offers peace of mind before making major changes and gives you greater control over your keyboard configurations.

While Bazecor already creates automatic backups each time you save changes, this manual option allows you to archive or manage specific versions with greater precision.

This update includes this new feature, several minor bug fixes, and improvements.

You can check the full release notes here for those interested in more details.

New Beta Firmware for Raise 2 & Defy

Now, onto something that’s been a long time coming—firmware updates.

About a month ago, we released firmware version 2.0 for the Defy and version 1.2 for the Raise 2. These updates represent a significant improvement in overall performance. We have completely rewritten the communications between the keyboard halves, leading to greater stability.

Bluetooth connectivity has also been enhanced, and battery life is considerably better when the LEDs are turned off.

We've also introduced more configuration options for the “Add a key on tap” feature, which helps reduce accidental triggers while using home row modifiers. Lastly, the LED effects have been rewritten for better efficiency and smoother visuals.

No major firmware update would be complete without a few challenges along the way.

One particularly stubborn bug we addressed involved the keyboard unexpectedly switching to Bluetooth mode during computer boot-up, even on strictly wired models.

This issue arose because the Bluetooth antenna, which is part of the Wireless Neuron used in both wireless and wired keyboards, would automatically activate when it detected power from the computer but did not register a USB connection. Some USB-C ports do not initiate data communication until the device begins drawing power, which caused the keyboard to unexpectedly switch to Bluetooth mode.

Dygma Defy Bluetooth over wired

To resolve this, we developed a “state machine” that helps the Neuron understand whether one or both sides of the keyboard are connected. With this logic in place, the keyboard will no longer switch to Bluetooth automatically if both sides are plugged in. That said, Bluetooth is still accessible manually by assigning and pressing the Bluetooth pairing key, which you can easily configure within the Layout Editor in Bazecor.

Bazecor Bluetooth Pairing

This update is particularly beneficial for users who want the flexibility to connect their keyboard to a desktop via a wired connection for charging or low latency, while also being able to switch to a laptop or tablet using Bluetooth. Switching between devices is easy: simply press the Bluetooth pairing key to automatically connect to your last paired device. Pressing the key again will put the keyboard into Bluetooth pairing mode, and pressing the top-left yellow key (usually labeled ESC) will return you to wired mode.

It’s important to note that the state machine functions correctly only when the keyboard's sides are turned off. If the sides remain on, the Neuron will draw power from them instead of the computer, preventing a USB connection from being established.

We encourage you to try this firmware and share your feedback with us. If the testing is successful, it will officially be released as Defy v2.1 and Raise 2 v1.2.

Dygma Certified Refurbished: Loved Again

Occasionally, a Dygma keyboard returns to us—not due to defects, but because it simply didn’t find the right owner 😢

Instead of letting these beautiful keyboards gather dust in a warehouse, we’ve decided to give them a second chance by launching our Dygma Certified Refurbished shop.

Dygma Certified Refurbished

Each returned keyboard undergoes a comprehensive inspection, testing, and repackaging process. The result is a product that looks and feels brand new, all while offering the complete Dygma experience at a reduced price. This is also an opportunity to acquire discontinued color options or unique configurations that are no longer available in our main store.

Dygma Defy Limited edition

Our Certified Refurbished shop currently only has Dygma Defy, but we plan to update the selection regularly. So be sure to check back often—you never know what treasures might appear.

Introducing Dygma AI: Our Support Bot

And now, the highlight of this Ergobits: the launch of Dygma AI. We’ve spent the last few months reworking and expanding our documentation with a major goal: improving support. That journey led us to experiment with an AI assistant, powered by a custom-trained GPT model.

Dygma AI Bot

At first, results were... let’s say, unpredictable. The bot sometimes made things up if the documentation wasn’t clear or detailed. But we kept training, kept refining, and tested every kind of question we could imagine. Each time it stumbled, we updated our docs to improve its accuracy.

The result is something we’re really excited about. Dygma AI is your always available, slightly clumsy, but genuinely helpful friend 🫶

You can start chatting with it at dygma.com/support-bot. Whether you’re looking for layout help, trying to troubleshoot Bluetooth pairing or need guidance on firmware updates, Dygma AI is ready to assist.

But, it’s still not perfect, and that’s where you come in. We’ve set up a quick form at dygma.com/feedback-ai where you can send us suggestions or let us know when it messes up.

And yes, we know DygmAI isn’t the smoothest name. It’s just a placeholder for now, so we’re taking suggestions—send us your best ideas!

Of course, Dygma AI is just one way to get support. Our human team—Ana, Boro, and sometimes Miquel—is always just a message away via Discord, Reddit, or email at support@dygma.com.

And that's it!

Whether you’re excited to export your layouts, flash new firmware, pick up a refurbished keyboard, or chat with our new robotic support assistant, we hope you found something to love in this update.

Hasta la vista, baby 🤖
