9 Secret Features of Your Keyboard You’re Not Using

Don't you love it when you discover something new about your gadgets? It feels like an unexpected gift.

That same feeling can happen with your keyboard. Even after years of use, there are features that hide in plain sight and can completely change how you interact with it.

Here are 9 "secret" features of Dygma keyboards that can help you get more out of your setup, plus a bonus one at the end.

1. Change the Name of Your Keyboard

A simple but useful feature: you can rename your keyboard inside Bazecor.

Just head over to Preferences, then next to the name, press the edit button, and change it. Save changes and voilà!

It’s a small detail, but it helps personalize your setup and keep things organized.

2. Highlight Layer Change

There is a subtle feature that improves usability without draining battery: highlight layer change.

When your LEDS are very low, switching layers briefly increases LED brightness, giving you a clear visual cue.

This allows you to keep your LEDs at a lower brightness while still knowing exactly when a layer change happens.

You can activate it under Preferences > LED. And if you scroll to the bottom, you will see the section Highlight layer changing.

Just activate it and press "Save changes".

3. Use Bluetooth While Wired

One of the lesser-known features: you can use Bluetooth mode even when the keyboard is plugged in.

Just press the Bluetooth pairing key, and the keyboard will show the pairing interface. If you already have a channel paired, it will connect to that channel.

And if you want to go back to wired, just press the yellow top-left key, and you are back to wired.

This makes switching between devices seamless, without having to unplug anything.

4. Export and Import Layers

Dygma keyboards allow you to export and import layers, making it easy to save and reuse custom layouts.

This is especially useful for workflows you don’t use every day, like specific tools, games, or software setups.

To use it, go to the layout editor, open the layer menu, and select “Share selected layer” or “Load single layer”.

5. Copy From Layer

Inside the same menu, there is another practical feature: copy from layer.

This allows you to duplicate a layer into another one, which is perfect when testing new layouts while keeping the original intact.

So, for example, if you want to copy the base layer to layer 9, head over to the layout editor. Then select the layer you want to copy to, press the cog icon, and press Copy from Layer.

Select the layer you want to copy from, then press Copy Layer, and voilà, it's copied.

6. One-Shot Layers

One of the most powerful features is one-shot layers.

The behavior is simple:

  • Tap - activate the layer for one keypress
  • Hold - keep the layer active while holding
  • Double-tap - lock the layer
  • Tap again - unlock it

This makes it easy to switch between quick actions and sustained workflows without changing your layout.

You can enable it by selecting a key, going to Layers and Modifiers, and choosing Turn into one-shot layer.

Make sure the same key on the destination layer is set to transparent.

You can also do this with modifiers, like CTRL or SHIFT. So, if you double tap shift, you get something similar to CAPSLOCK.

Just select the modifier and click on Turn into One-Shot modifier.

7. Add Custom Keycodes

Bazecor lets you assign almost all keys you can find on a keyboard, but if you need something more specific, you can use custom keycodes.

To do this, find the key in the Keyboard or Consumer HID Usage tables, take its HEX code, and add it to 4000 for the keyboard page and 4800 for the consumer page, using a HEX calculator.

Then, enter the result using the wrench tool in the layout editor.

It’s not the simplest feature, but it lets you unlock actions that aren't available by default.

8. Emojis and Symbols in Names

A small feature that can make a big difference: you can use emojis and symbols when naming Superkeys or macros.

This helps visually identify what each action does, making your layout easier to understand at a glance.

For example, I have a key here that is Desktop on tap and Alt on hold; Delete on tap and Command on hold; Backspace on tap and Shift on hold; and I use the symbols or emojis for that to represent tap and hold in the name of the superkey.

And my favorite one here is enter on tap and the mouse layer on hold, which I represented with a nice little mouse emoji.

This way, I can see everything that each key does at a glance, without having to either go to the superkeys menu or select it to see what it does.

9. The Screw Holes on the Back

One of the most unique features is hidden on the back of the keyboard: four screw holes. These act as a platform for customization.

You can use them to attach accessories, build custom tenting solutions, or even create completely unique setups. You can find more options here.

And if you'd rather not have to 3D print or engineer something, don't worry; we have developed an adaptor puck that you can attach to those holes and use with any camera arm that has a 1/4" standard screw head.

You can get those adaptors, as well as the articulated arms, at Dygma.com/arms. This allows for advanced positioning beyond standard tenting.

Bonus: Use Only One Side in Bluetooth

Here’s a fun edge case.

Normally, to use the keyboard in Bluetooth mode, you need to place the Neuron in the back of the left half. But what if you're left-handed and you only want to use the right-hand side? We got you.

Since the Neuron is the Bluetooth antenna, you can connect it directly to the right side, and it will also work over Bluetooth.

Of course, this is a corner case use, because you can also use only the right side in RF mode (with the neuron connected to the computer), but we couldn't refrain from showing it to you.

These features show that there is more to ergonomic keyboards than meets the eye.

Some are small quality-of-life improvements, while others unlock entirely new ways of using your keyboard.
